On our way to Yellowstone we took a small detour to go see Martin's Cove in Wyoming, a place important to pioneer history. This was where a Mormon handcart pioneer company found a little bit of refuge after crossing the Sweetwater river from the horrible blizzards. Tragically, over a fourth of their company died on the journey across the plains.
We wanted to teach the kids a little bit about this pioneer heritage and let them pull a handcart for a little bit. Obviously there was no blizzard and they only pulled it for a little less than a mile, but it was still a good experience for us.
We later ditched the carts and hiked over to Devil's Gate (also an important site).
We all rolled up our pants(some more than others) and played a while in the Sweetwater River.
Nathan and I will be coming back here this next summer with some of the youth in our church for a week- long trek. We're really excited for the opportunity.
